Anyone that has had their computer and/or hard drive crash during an important project knows how frustrating data loss is. It doesn’t matter if you’ve had to rewrite a school paper or re-rip your record collection, you understand that sinking feeling you get when you realize that everything is gone.

Here’s what I use to prevent <del>insanity </del>data loss.

1. Dropbox

Dorpbox is a great service for backing up important files, sharing work documents, and easily syncing files between computers.Dropbox offers 2Gb of online storage free with an option to pay for up to 100gb.

Besides being an awesome file storage site, Dropbox also has a number of other useful features. My favorite is the ability to share a folder with family and friends. Being able to access documents on your phone isn’t to shabby either.

If Dropbox doesn’t suit you, Wuala and Amazon offer great alternatives.

2. Eaton 3S UPS (Uninterruptible Power System)

Please, don’t learn the hard way like I did. Having a battery back up system could give you the opportunity to save any open files and safely shut down a computer after a power outage.

Having the 3S could have given me up to 45 minutes to safely cancel my latest re-installation of windows 7. Instead I had to deal with the frustration of having an OS installation crash part way though. Never again!

The Eaton 3S can also be used to protect a number of other electronic devices, such as TVs, game systems, aquarium equipment and more.

An added benefit of using Easton’s 3s 750 is the money you’ll save using their Eco control feature. Eco control will cut power to peripherals once the master device is shut off to help conserve energy.

This UPS includes a surge suppressor that offers advanced power protection and energy savings.

3. External Hard drives

It’s surprising how many people don’t at least use an external hard drive to back up their files. While you probably shouldn’t buy one now, external hard drives are usually cheap and are great for backing up large files. They are especially convenient if you have to transfer large file between computers.

Having several drives for different files can be useful. I use and encrypted 200GB Eagle Tech drive for personal files and a 1.5TB Western Digital drive for large video files and my music collection.

4. Crashplan

Iv’e already listed a few ways to back up your files but one of the easiest ways to accomplish a truly safe and secure backup is with an online backup solution like Crashplan. Crashplan allows you to automatically make a full offsite backup of your computer’s hard drive/s.

Crashplan’s +Unlimited subscription allows you to back up all of your computer’s internal hard drives for $49 a year. Crashplan works by having you install an application that uploads everything on your computer to their servers. Once the application is done ( it’s going to take a while) you can remotely browse and download any file you want.

Because it’s always working, Crashplan is especially convenient for the times you get recycle-bin happy and mistakenly delete a file.

Bonus. TruCrypt

TruCypt (and a good password) ensures your data stays safe if you lose your external hard drive or have your off-site backup solution compromised.

This post is brought to you by Eaton. Welcome to the world of sleek, savvy and sophisticated power protection with Eaton’s new 3S battery backup. The ideal solution for home office/small office computers and accessories, networking and VoIP systems, and home entertainment devices.

The past couple of days has seen a lot of attention paid to the branding of Sony’s ‘NGP’. Although blog, Gamespundt, was credited with a lot of the information revealed it seems a different blog beat them to the punch.

Now defunct blog Mega Rock Blog seems to have been the first to announce details, but in a twist of circumstances, the blog’s since dissipated from the web, sparking rumors that it’s announcements weren’t meant to be made. To further these rumors, a final post on the blog stated: “This has to be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever done. I don’t know what I was thinking. I’m sorry. I really am.”

Whether or not the whole PS ‘Vita’ is a hoax, or whether somebody got their hands on information that wasn’t meant to be leaked yet is currently uncertain. It looks like the answer will be revealed during Sony’s marathon 5 hour E3 conference.

Full Press release below.

Elmsford, N.Y., June 11, 2010 – Turtle Beach, a leader in premium XBOX 360®, PlayStation® and PC gaming headsets, today announced it will introduce its new Ear Force PBT Bluetooth Communicator for PS3 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3®) 2010 in Los Angeles (June 15 – 17, LA Convention Center, South Hall, Booth 417). The innovative dual-pairing Ear Force PBT is an earpiece device that’s usable with any Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone both during gaming and on its own. This notable convenience feature of the Ear Force PBT enables gamers engaged in PlayStation Network (PSN) play to receive phone calls while gaming without missing a beat and underscores Turtle Beach’s forward-thinking approach to delivering superior audio and communication platforms for gaming and other entertainment experiences.
A pioneer and leader in the video game peripheral marketplace, Turtle Beach is undertaking an extensive rebranding to fortify its position with gamers, while extending its reach deeper into mainstream lifestyle markets.
“Gamers are multi-taskers. A lightweight earpiece that can be used both with the PS3 and Bluetooth compatible mobile phones, the Ear Force PBT provides exceptional game audio, communication and convenience for either application, or both at the same time.” said Michael Arzt, Turtle Beach Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. “This performance and value proposition will make the PBT the go-to, all-in-one communications solution for many PS3 gamers.”
The Ear Force PBT connects to Turtle Beach’s Ear Force X31 and X41 XBOX headsets, via a 2.5mm jack, enabling them to be used with PS3 and its full PSN chat functionality. It can also be fully charged in under two hours to provide up to eight hours of talk time. A convenient, removable alligator clip allows gamers to attach the unit to clothing for easy access.
The Turtle Beach Ear Force PBT (MSRP: $49.95) will be available starting in July atwww.TurtleBeach.com, as well as at other online retailers and major US and Canadian retail stores. Turtle Beach premium gaming and audio products are available at Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon.com, Newegg, Meijer, Best Buy Canada, The Future Shop and other fine retailers. Turtle Beach products are distributed in Europe by Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. (AMEX/TSX: MCZ www.madcatz.com.)

With over 100 new features, Apple fans around the world are getting excited. However here at DaxGamer we wanted to give you a rundown of what to expect from your iPhone, iPod touch or – if you’re able to get your hands on one on May 28th – iPad.

DaxGamers notable new features in 4.0

Multitasking (3GS and 3rd gen iPod only) – One that got me most excited. I have always been wary to jailbreak my iPhone – although I love to think what I could do if my device was jailbroken, I really don’t want to be the new owner of a £400″ iBrick”. Users simply double tap the home button to bring up a multitask bar which shows all apps open and can switch from one app to the other and close apps running in the background.

User-Defined Wallpaper – Yet another great jailbreak favourite of mine, users now have full control of the background when unlocked instead of being welcomed to just a boring black background.

Spell Check – Already seen on the iPad, when creating sms or notes, if the iPhone believes you misspelled a word then it will show the user a list of possible words that it believes you are spelling.

Camera Updates – Users are now able to have a 5x digital zoom – at last I don’t have to use a third party app that never seems to work. Other updates include touch to focus whilst recording video (3GS only).

Folders – At last, soon I will not have pages and pages of apps, instead have them neatly stored away in named folders.

Game Centre – Not too sure about this one – it’s like Xbox Live but for iPhone with achievements, leader boards and match making. But I have my doubts of this taking off, mainly due to battery life whilst using games on the iPhone and the amount of data this could use. I’m sure there will be reports of massive bills to come – I would have to use wi-fi if I was to use this.

Screen orientation lock – Does exactly that. It locks the device to either portrait or landscape – great feature as I’m always finding the iPhone changing it for me. This is done by a button on the screen, whereas the iPad has a side button like the silent slider on the iPhone.

Overall I’m generally very excited for OS 4.0 – it’s great to have new features to play with and it will make me love the iPhone more for sure. It’s just a shame that not all the features will be available on every iPhone / iPod.
