The Best Games of 2011: Playstation 3

2011 was a really good year for Sony’s Playstation 3. It saw the continuation of (arguably) it’s best series, Uncharted. Uncharted 3 was an absolute winner on all accounts. With it’s amazing story and revitalized multiplayer, it’s definitely one to buy. It also saw the release of Killzone 3, which picks up exactly where the second finished, and with it’s stellar storyline and it’s multiplayer is an awesome combination. Although it was a cross-platform game, the playstation also got The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim, whose addicting gameplay will surely have you playing it for hours on end. inFAMOUS 2 was also an amazing title, along with the release of Resistance 3. The PS3 had an amazing year, and here’s to many more!

DC Universe Online: Now Free to Play

You probably remember the popular title, DC Universe Online, which came out early this year. The MMO where you create your own superhero (or villain) and fight along your favorites from the comics. Well up until now, DCUO has costs you at least $14.99 per month. To a lot of people, that is a major deal-breaker. Sony Online Entertainment, or SOE, for short, announced that DC Universe Online will go free to play November 1. That day has arrived, and for those of you who have waited to be a superhero on a budget, your wish is granted. Instead of the plain-old $15 a month plan, there are now three plans you may choose from:

Free: costs nothing, and you may have up to two characters free
Premium: spend $5 or more, and you may have up to six characters free
Legendary: $14.99, and you may have 16 characters

PlayStation Vita release Date Announced

Tonight, Sony has announced the PlayStation Vita will be released simultaneously in most of Sony’s major territories on February 22, 2012.

As previously announced, the handheld console will be available in two SKUs: the cheaper $249.99 Wi-Fi only model and a more expensive 3G/Wi-Fi model that will run you $299.

The handhelds launch lineup wasn’t announced, but there are over 100 games currently in development for the handheld, including Sound Shapes, Resistance: Burning Skies, wipEout 2048, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Assassin’s Creed, FIFA, Call of Duty and Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

Men In Black Video Game Coming In 2012

Activision and Columbia Pictures are teaming up to bring you a new Men In Black video game. The release of the MIB video game will coincide with the theatrical release of Men In Black 3.

Being that it’s a movie tie-in game from Activision, I’m expecting Men In Black to be a standard(read: boring) third person shooter with aliens thrown in the mix. Maybe it’ll have awesome weapons?

Men In Black is being developed by Fun Labs and is currently set for a spring 2012 release.

First Gran Turismo 5 DLC packs announced

MW3 vs. BF3: A DaxGamer In-Depth Look

Since the beginning of time, there were two major shooter series. There was Call of Duty, the fast paced shooter where you take it upon yourself to single-handedly annihilate the opposing team. Throughout CoD’s life so far, we’ve experienced amazing campaigns, some of which have even captivated fans as far as to literally make them cry (A.K.A. Ghost’s Death). Call of Duty has also been famous for their awesome multiplayer, where people spend countless hours unlocking guns and of course, prestiging until we get to tenth or fifteenth prestige. Some people don’t agree though, because they feel that prestiging, then losing your guns and having to unlock them all over again, can become tedious and boring. Also, sometimes you can be caught by a camper, so you run right back to where he is to try to kill him, just to be thwarted by that same man again, and that itself can get very frustrating. Another downfall is the graphics of CoD, which from the trailer, seem to not have changed since MW2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 hits the shelves November 8.

Then, there was Battlefield, the more strategical game based on teamwork. Throughout Battlefield’s life so far, we’ve experienced funny campaigns that don’t take themselves too seriously, while maintaining a great storyline. Then there’s the multiplayer, that has tons of unlocks and something that Call of Duty will never have: vehicles. Vehicles have been what sets Battlefield apart from all the other shooters, and thats not changing that anytime soon. Teamwork is a huge part of Battlefield, which makes your life in multiplayer a little longer. Also, Battlefield’s new Frostbite 2 engine makes their graphics phenomenal, and really helps this game feel like a real battle. Battlefield launches October 25.

Another thing we have to remember is that we cannot make a decision about either game from just their trailers or their beta. I guess We’ll just have to wait until they are both released to make a final judgment.

Sony has kicked off their ‘Long Live Play’campaign with this gamer dedicated ad titled “Michael”. The commercial features appearances from some of Sony’s most popular characters, including Uncharted‘s Drake, God of War‘s Kratos, Metal Gear’s Old Snake, LPB’s Sack boy, and more. ‘Long Live Play’ will replace Sony’s famous ”It only does everything’ campaign.

All You Need To Know About MW3

So coming this November 8th we will have our third installment in the Modern Warfare series, Now not everyone plays the story but the Call of Duty series is very famous for their multiplayer. They have added a couple major upgrades. We will get to those later.

The new mode survival is coming out with MW3, you and 1 other person will fight endless waves of enemies and each round the enemies get more difficult. Enemies do not spawn at fixed locations but instead tactical locations based on where the player is. You also earn cash for weapons and ammo. Multiplayer, what everyone has been waiting for is totally reamped. There are now 3 different “strike packages” for killstreaks called Assault, Support, and Specialist. The Assault strike package works the same as the default killstreak reward system in Modern Warfare 2 and Black ops. The Support strike package offers support-style rewards such as UAVs and SAM Turrets. Unlike previous games in the franchise, the Support strike package will not make the player’s killstreak reward reset upon death, but instead, accumulate over the course of a match. The Specialist strike package rewards players with perks instead of killstreaks. After every eighth consecutive kill, the player will receive every perk in the game, but will reset back to none upon death.

Modern Warfare 3 will not use a money system for weapons and such. Quick scoping has returned from MW2. You will not be able to dive in MW3. Unlike previous game in the series, the player’s weapon will level up alongside the player. As the weapon levels up, the weapon unlocks a number of Proficiency perks such as Kick (reduced recoil while aiming down your sight) and Focus (stay focused under fire). Only one Proficiency can be put on a single weapon and is only allowed to be put on primary weapons. Another new addition is the ability to equip Hybrid Scopes on a weapon, such as a Red Dot Sight and ACOG Sight on a single weapon, and the player can switch between the scopes. A new gamemode has also been added, titled “Kill Confirmed”. Kill Confirmed requires players to collect floating dog tags from the corpse of a downed enemy before the kill can be registered. However, the opposing team can pick up the dogtag aswell to deny the other team of a kill. Another gamemode has also been added titled “Team Defender”. In Team Defender, each team must cap the opposing team’s flag, and hold it to accumulate points. Private matches also now include pre-made gamemodes including “Infection” (where the infected kills enemies to recruit them to their team), “Drop Zone” (where you must hold a drop zone for points and care packages), “Team Juggernaut” (each team plays alongside an AI Juggernaut character), “Gun Game” (be the first to get one kill with every gun in the game) and “One in the Chamber” (in which players are only allowed one pistol with one bullet and three lives where they can only get more bullets by killing other players). Along with this, players are allowed to create their own game modes with customized settings such as number of players and time limit.

Portal 2 DLC Release Date Announced

“Portal 2:Peer Review” finally has a release date. The DLC, which was originally supposed to be out in the summer, will be playable on all consoles October 4. This new content will allow you to become P-Body and Atlas once again in co-op, also with a single player challenge mode.

Battlefield 3 Open Beta Releases Today

Well, for those of you who didn’t get to the beta early, because you got the Limited Edition of Medal of Honor, or pre-ordered the PC version from Origin, the Battlefield 3 beta starts today. In the beta, there is one map, Operation Metro, and one game mode, Rush. Also, the stats from the beta won’t carry over into the final version of the game, but to me, it’s worth it!
The beta will be open until October 10, and then, it will only be fifteen short days until the game’s release. So tell me, are you going to be playing the beta for one of the most-anticipated games of the year?
