The Call of Duty franchise has seen great success over the years especially since Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare when it was released back in 2007. Since the series shifted to modern times the games have immersed players with their adrenaline filled campaigns, amazing set pieces and addictive online multiplayer. The formula hasn’t changed since then but it hasn’t had to because that’s what has made the franchise so popular. In comes Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 which was developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games. It’s the final installment in the series and is supposed to wrap up the events of first two Modern Warfare games. Does this latest iteration go out with a bang? Read the review to find out.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3′s campaign continues right after the events of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Vladamir Makarov is the main threat and is looking to cause global chaos and destruction once again. You take control of several soldiers throughout the campaign in search of Makarov. You visit areas such as, New York City, London, Prague, Berlin and Paris. Making their return are SAS Cpt. John Price and Cpt. John Soap MacTavish as they are on the run after killing the corrupt Lt. General Shepherd. Most of the time you are participating in intense on foot firefights. You will also take control of a Jeep, a fighter plane and even provide remote air support. The player is further immersed thanks to some great set pieces. The Campaign takes about 5 1/2 hours to complete. It’s an intense and exciting thrill ride but one that’s over far too quickly which is a major disappointment. For an even greater challenge try playing the game on the Hardened and Veteran difficulties. My two major gripes with the game are the infinitely spawning enemies and their dumb A.I. Enemies will keep respawning until I reach a certain checkpoint. An enemy will charge at me while holding a weapon with no regard to his safety. You have your usual assortment of weapons at your disposal such as, an M4A1 with Hybrid Sight, XM25, Desert Eagle, M14 EBR Scoped, USP .45, etc.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 uses the old graphics engine from past games but that’s not a bad thing. The game still looks really good. They are somewhat of an improvement when compared to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Character models look good. Set pieces and explosions are amazing as usual. Buildings will get destroyed. One hectic moment sees you while you’re in a fighter plane as it’s about to crash-land. Another scenario has you underwater as you are about to get inside a submarine. There is an impressive firefight in a city while it gets destroyed. Moments such as those look really good. Firefights look as intense ever. Water effects are well done as are the smoke and fire effects. Lighting and shadows are impressive as well. The PC version does look better than the PS3 and XBOX 360 versions because of the ability of having a higher resolution and advanced graphical options. I was able to run the game with the detail settings set to extra and there was no slowdown whatsoever. The game utilizes the MW3 Engine (IW 5.0 Engine). Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is the first installment in the series to have support for color-blind gamers. Despite the old graphics engine Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 still looks pretty impressive.

The audio department is equally as impressive. Actors such as, Idris Alba, William Fichtner, Timothy Olyphant, Bill Murray and Kevin McKidd lend their voice work for the game which are all well done. Brian Tyler composed the musical score which was then recorded by a symphony orchestra. Weapon sounds are even better than those in previous iterations in the series thanks to an upgrade in sound effect. The sound of crumbling buildings and explosions are top-notch. Your ears will ring with the impact of a grenade. A decent speaker setup will further immerse players into the game’s audio department.

Of course Call of Duty wouldn’t be complete without online multiplayer and there is where the game shines once again. You have killstreaks and perks. Leveling up gives you the ability to unlock weapons. Weapons can be upgraded as well. Killstreaks have been balanced out while still rewarding various player types. You have a Support Strike Package. This is great for those who don’t go on huge killstreaks or don’t keep up with kill and death ratios. Less seasoned players can still compete. The focus on offense isn’t as a great as it is in the Assault Package, however kills do carry over between spawns. Staples in the series such as, Deathmatch and Capture the Flag make their return. There is a new mode this time around that is called Kill Confirmed. It helps to change things up a bit because in order to get points not only do you need to perform a kill but you also need to collect the tag. Tags can be used to lure enemies as well. With Team Defender each team needs to hold on to the flag as long as possible. Overall there are 16 varied maps. You also have Spec Ops which is split into sub modes: Challenge and Survival. In challenge Mode you have several missions that are taken from the Campaign with some added twists. They can be played solo or co-op. Some of these missions are timed as well. In Survival Mode you face waves upon waves of enemies that get increasingly more difficult as your progress. New to the series is a service called Call of Duty: Elite. It is a free/subscription based system that is utilized for the game’s multiplayer aspect. The free version features lifetime statistics and social networking. The subscription version features DLC, competitions for prizes, pro analysis, etc. It costs $49.99 per year. Unfortunately, the PC version of the service has yet to be released.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was an awesome game. It does a great job of wrapping up the events of the first two games in the series. The story was good. I enjoyed playing the Campaign Mode although it was too short. Respawning enemies was annoying as was the dumb enemy A.I. at times. The game still looks good despite using an old graphics engine. The voice work is well done. Weapon sounds were upgraded which is a huge plus. The game’s musical score was impressive. The game’s set pieces and huge firefights are still intense and adrenaline filled as ever. Online multiplayer is engaging and addicting. New modes like Kill Confirmed and Team Defender help to keep things fresh to go along with the 16 varied maps. Survival and Challenge mode are hectic and fun. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was one of the best games that I played this year and is the best installment in the series.

The MMO where you create your own superhero (or villain) and fight along your favorites from the comics. Well up until now, DCUO has costs you at least $14.99 per month. To a lot of people, that is a major deal-breaker. Sony Online Entertainment, or SOE, for short, announced that DC Universe Online will go free to play November 1. That day has arrived, and for those of you who have waited to be a superhero on a budget, your wish is granted. Instead of the plain-old $15 a month plan, there are now three plans you may choose from:

Free: costs nothing, and you may have up to two characters free

Premium: spend $5 or more, and you may have up to six characters free

Legendary: $14.99, and you may have 16 characters

For more info on the Free to Play program, visit DC Universe Online’s site, at dcuniverseonline.com

Since the beginning of time, there were two major shooter series. There was Call of Duty, the fast paced shooter where you take it upon yourself to single-handedly annihilate the opposing team. Throughout CoD’s life so far, we’ve experienced amazing campaigns, some of which have even captivated fans as far as to literally make them cry (A.K.A. Ghost’s Death). Call of Duty has also been famous for their awesome multiplayer, where people spend countless hours unlocking guns and of course, prestiging until we get to tenth or fifteenth prestige. Some people don’t agree though, because they feel that prestiging, then losing your guns and having to unlock them all over again, can become tedious and boring. Also, sometimes you can be caught by a camper, so you run right back to where he is to try to kill him, just to be thwarted by that same man again, and that itself can get very frustrating. Another downfall is the graphics of CoD, which from the trailer, seem to not have changed since MW2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 hits the shelves November 8.

Then, there was Battlefield, the more strategical game based on teamwork. Throughout Battlefield’s life so far, we’ve experienced funny campaigns that don’t take themselves too seriously, while maintaining a great storyline. Then there’s the multiplayer, that has tons of unlocks and something that Call of Duty will never have: vehicles. Vehicles have been what sets Battlefield apart from all the other shooters, and thats not changing that anytime soon. Teamwork is a huge part of Battlefield, which makes your life in multiplayer a little longer. Also, Battlefield’s new Frostbite 2 engine makes their graphics phenomenal, and really helps this game feel like a real battle. Battlefield launches October 25.

Another thing we have to remember is that we cannot make a decision about either game from just their trailers or their beta. I guess We’ll just have to wait until they are both released to make a final judgment.

The over the top first-person shooter was scheduled for release in mid-October but has been delayed into November.

Croteam’s Alen Ladavac on the games delay:

“We have been working very hard on SS3 all the way, and especially in these recent months trying to make it for the promised October 18,” he said. “In the past few days, we did some reassessments, based both on internal results, and on beta testing feedback, and determined that we would want to do some more gameplay tuning, bugfixing and optimization – more than would be possible within the given timeframe. This is the game that we have invested a lot of love and work into, and one that we know the series’ fans are expecting a lot from. “So we decided it needed one extra month of development time. You will know details later in the day, but for now – one month it is – one month of extra tuning and polish that Serious Sam 3 deserves if we really love it and want it to be a great game.”

Serious Sam 3 will be released on PC November 22 with console versions following later.

So coming this November 8th we will have our third installment in the Modern Warfare series, Now not everyone plays the story but the Call of Duty series is very famous for their multiplayer. They have added a couple major upgrades. We will get to those later.

The new mode survival is coming out with MW3, you and 1 other person will fight endless waves of enemies and each round the enemies get more difficult. Enemies do not spawn at fixed locations but instead tactical locations based on where the player is. You also earn cash for weapons and ammo. Multiplayer, what everyone has been waiting for is totally reamped. There are now 3 different “strike packages” for killstreaks called Assault, Support, and Specialist. The Assault strike package works the same as the default killstreak reward system in Modern Warfare 2 and Black ops. The Support strike package offers support-style rewards such as UAVs and SAM Turrets. Unlike previous games in the franchise, the Support strike package will not make the player’s killstreak reward reset upon death, but instead, accumulate over the course of a match. The Specialist strike package rewards players with perks instead of killstreaks. After every eighth consecutive kill, the player will receive every perk in the game, but will reset back to none upon death.

Modern Warfare 3 will not use a money system for weapons and such. Quick scoping has returned from MW2. You will not be able to dive in MW3. Unlike previous game in the series, the player’s weapon will level up alongside the player. As the weapon levels up, the weapon unlocks a number of Proficiency perks such as Kick (reduced recoil while aiming down your sight) and Focus (stay focused under fire). Only one Proficiency can be put on a single weapon and is only allowed to be put on primary weapons. Another new addition is the ability to equip Hybrid Scopes on a weapon, such as a Red Dot Sight and ACOG Sight on a single weapon, and the player can switch between the scopes. A new gamemode has also been added, titled “Kill Confirmed”. Kill Confirmed requires players to collect floating dog tags from the corpse of a downed enemy before the kill can be registered. However, the opposing team can pick up the dogtag aswell to deny the other team of a kill. Another gamemode has also been added titled “Team Defender”. In Team Defender, each team must cap the opposing team’s flag, and hold it to accumulate points. Private matches also now include pre-made gamemodes including “Infection” (where the infected kills enemies to recruit them to their team), “Drop Zone” (where you must hold a drop zone for points and care packages), “Team Juggernaut” (each team plays alongside an AI Juggernaut character), “Gun Game” (be the first to get one kill with every gun in the game) and “One in the Chamber” (in which players are only allowed one pistol with one bullet and three lives where they can only get more bullets by killing other players). Along with this, players are allowed to create their own game modes with customized settings such as number of players and time limit.

Well, for those of you who didn’t get to the beta early, because you got the Limited Edition of Medal of Honor, or pre-ordered the PC version from Origin, the Battlefield 3 beta starts today. In the beta, there is one map, Operation Metro, and one game mode, Rush. Also, the stats from the beta won’t carry over into the final version of the game, but to me, it’s worth it!
The beta will be open until October 10, and then, it will only be fifteen short days until the game’s release. So tell me, are you going to be playing the beta for one of the most-anticipated games of the year?
