EA, Electronic Arts, has just received the rights to make Star Wars games for the foreseeable future.
This deal comes on the heels of Disney, the new owners of the Star Wars franchise after purchasing it from LucasFilm, shutting down LucasArts which was the gaming branch of LucasFilm. This had effectively killed some games in progress including the announced Star Wars 1313 though with the transfer of the license to EA those games could be resurrected. It was announced that DICE, Visceral, and Bioware would all be working on games within the Star Wars license. Due to the terms of the agreement though, none of the games will be in the mobile or social market as Disney retained the rights to produce games in that sphere.
No official titles have been announced yet but with Bioware’s already stellar efforts in making Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Old Republic MMO this is a potentially positive sign of things to come.
