What was once known just as XCOM has been announced as still in development but now with the brand new title of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. Originally set to be a first person shooter, it has now morphed into a 3rd Person, squad-based shooter explaining the origins of XCOM in 1960s America. The game will have the Cold War looming in the background as you try to battle the aliens encroaching on American soil while trying to keep the public from finding out. You’ll play as Agent William Carter who is a Bureau recruit, finding out first hand what the Bureau does and hopefully what the aliens are trying to do.
So far we know that there will be tech upgrades for you and your squad and that you will often be outnumbered. The interface that allows you to direct your squad around the battlefield and issues orders is called “Battle Focus.” You’ll be able to direct movement, targeting priority, and more using this interface.
Similar to the strategy XCOM there is perma-death for all but your character. If one of your squadmates bites it, you’ll have to train a brand new replacement which means you’ll lose out on all of the upgrades you invested into the dead character.
The game is apparently going to be very heavily single-player with no multiplayer mode being announced for it. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is expected to release on August 20th in the U.S. for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC for $59.99.
